Amethyst is the birthstone for February and can be found in varying shades of purple. A top quality stone will be flawless and a clear (transparent) deep purple in colour.

The word amethyst is derived from the greek "not drunken" or "without drunkenness" and the stone is believed to protect the wearer from the effects of wine if held under the tongue while drinking. (We don't recommend trying this!).

Amethyst is often heat treated and converted to the stone Citrine.

Amethyst is usually quite affordable and can be found in Brazil, Canada, India, Madagascar, Namibia, Russia, Sri Lanka & the USA.
