June is unique in that it has two acceptable birthstones - Pearl & Alexandrite. Pearls are formed inside a mollusk, grown as a response to an irritant felt by the animal. Pearls can be found in many shades of whites, and different shapes - from perfectly spherical to the baroque.
Alexandrite is one of the few color change gemstones. It can appear to be different colors in both natural and fluorescent light. Rare in it's natural form, and available in a synthetic form is is available with the same color-change properties.
Pearls are linked to the Goddess Venus as a symbol of innocence. Alexandrite was named for Czar Alexander II (Russia).
Pearls are readily found in both sea & fresh-water varieties. Natural Pearls have been harvested from the Red Sea, Gulf of Manaar, and the Persian Gulf. The coasts of Australia and Polynesia produce mostly cultured pearls. Fresh water pearls occur in many rivers in places such as Austria, France, Scotland, Ireland, and the USA.
Alexandrite is found in Brazil, Madagascar, Myanmar, Russia, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
