October's birthstone is the Opal. Opals are usually opaque white stones with rainbow color specks or flashes that appear over the surface and can be quite striking.

Opals are thought to possess the virtues of all the stones whose colors appear on their surface. It is said that the Roman senator Nonius chose exile rather than to give an Opal to Mark Antony.

More than 90% of the world's quality gem opals come from Southern Australia, although it can be found in other parts of the world such as Brazil, Mexico, Czechoslovakia and Nevada. All black opals come exclusively from Australia.
